General Inf'n about Adult Ed. (GEIS)
Membership / DUES /
Fairshare Benefits of membership include: Right to vote
in union elections, contract ratification; Right to become
a delegate to a state or national union convention; Employment
related legal services; National and
State member services programs (legal assistance, or member benefit programs
through Ed Minn, AFT, NEA); National and
State Publications. Individuals MUST have a membership
card on file at MFT to be a member (does not need to be renewed
annually). Otherwise, teachers are
considered “fairshare”. Paycheck
deductions are permitted under state law and the contract. ABE contract and hourly work that
belongs to the MFT bargaining unit. As
a result, MFT “exclusively represents” you in contract negotiations,
discipline and other Labor/Management activities. Short Call Reserves (substitutes, assigned through the MPS AESOP system) can belong to MFT once they have worked 20 consecutive duty days replacing the same teacher in a school year. They may
wish to purchase a substitute membership from Education Minnesota. Which is
applicable for subbing in any district in the state of Individuals teaching in other
districts while working in MPS only need to pay MFT’s portion of the dues if
they are already paying dues to the state and national teacher union
affiliates (Ed Minn, AFT, NEA) in the other district. They should should contact MFT directly
(Meline Juarez) to review their individual situations. MFT annually notifies MPS Payroll of
the rate schedule for fulltime, parttime and hourly teachers for that
year. Payroll applies and deducts the
dues or fees individually. If you need assistance with the rate

ABE Teachers Retro pay Retro related to the 2009-11 contract settlement was provided on 9/16/11. Step adjustments to pay for 2010-11 was implemented on 10/7/11. Questions? Contact Payroll (668-0420) -
they can look up your information and assist you the fastest.
