The real question is whether an ABE hourly teaching assignment is union work. The answer is an unqualified “YES” under state law and relevant rulings. ABE teachers regardless of the number of hours are doing work that belongs to the MFT bargaining unit. As a result, they are “exclusively represented” by MFT in contract negotiations, grievances and other Labor/Management activities per state law. Paycheck deductions are permitted under state law and the contract. Individual teachers have the option to sign a membership card if they wish full membership (note this does not need to be renewed annually). Teachers who are new or never signed a membership card will receive a fairshare notification annually. Individuals paying dues in other districts should contact MFT to determine whether they can be exempted from additional dues obligations while teaching in MPS.
